What uuuuuup? Hope you are having a great day and that you’re a kickin’ some bigtime ass.

And I truly mean that… I hope you are completely smashing it in all areas of your life… Do you know why? Because it is 100% all in your hands.

No one else is gonna give you the official title of ‘Mr Bad Ass’… or even has the right to decide if you are worthy or not of everything you want and deserve in life.

Without coming across as pessimistic, which I’m not, it is widely known that the majority of people here on planet earth are miserable in their lives, people are pissed off with their jobs, their relationships and the general flow of their lives. So I wouldn’t take – with a pinch of salt – what most of the people around you are telling you, unless you are lucky enough to have surrounded yourself with the awesome people who read my blog! In fact, not only are you better off not listening to said vampires you are better off learning what NOT to do from them. In not jokin’ around here… it’s true…. If you want to live the Rockstar life and kick some serious ass…watch what the majority of people do and do the opposite – a complete 180.  I mean this, if you want to be noticed and stand out you gotta swim against the tide, be a maverick, a Bad Ass, do things your way, no compromises and definitely not the way the ‘normal’ majority or the status quo believe things should be done.

Most people place their future in the hands of others and are very good at making excuses and finding alibis for everything that is wrong in their life…putting way too much emphasis on what others say…you should get a steady 9-5…you should work hard now to reap the benefits when you retire…do what the so called “experts think”, the economy isn’t right just now, and so the list can goes on and on. But guess what, NO DEAL! A BIG FAT NOOOOO DEAL!!!!!! Take your advice, no opinion and shove it.

Many professionals and 9-5 ers put way too much emphasis on the number of qualifications they have. Okay, now I know this ain’t gonna help me make any friends here…but to hell with it!! And here it is… You don’t need to have all these fancy qualifications and have those fancy letters after your name. Unless you’re a doctor or something, then those wee letters could make all the difference. The point I’m making is… if you want to design your life around your passions and turn what you love into how you make a living, then qualifications don’t mean jack.

NOW, If what you LEARNED to get those qualifications makes you better at what you do and moves you closer towards you goals, or if you enjoy getting further qualifications, by all means do so. There ain’t nuttin’ wrong with that.

9 times out of 10, entrepreneurs with the most qualifications and letters after their name make the least amount of money. Bill gates, Richard Branson and Mark Zuckerman, are all college dropouts. There are of course exceptions, but they’re rare.

It’s not like you can’t learn all that stuff on your own any way. All you need is the right books. And there are lots of great books out there which cover anything you want to learn… the only thing is that they don’t come with those little letters after your name.

Of course you gotta be good at what you do… but a bunch of letters after your name or some fancy title will have nothing to do with how good you are or how much money you’re capable of making.

Do you know that there are people out there that make a lot of money and have one hell of a good time making it?

They learn how to get from where they are today to where they want to go…they are self educated in business, sales, marketing, personal development and time management.

These people, ma’ friend, are mega action takers! Taking massive action in the direction of their goals…not just one or two things a day.. but massive action…seriously they get a huge amount of momentum going towards where they want to be in life.

They do things that force them to step out of the comfort zone (the only way to grow is to step out of your comfort zone and take fear head on) if you don’t grow as a person then there is a huge chance your business won’t grow also, the two are very closely related.

They don’t take any shit… but also they don’t give people any shit… they live by their own values and rules and let others do likewise.

They invest in themselves AND in their business…if you invest in the right things it will come back ten fold or even one hundred fold who knows, maybe even more. The investment isn’t necessarily financial, time is our most valuable commodity, we car earn back the money we wrongly invested but we can’t earn back our time spent invested in wrong interests.

And you may have guessed it, they most always work for themselves. If you really want to create a legacy and leave your mark you need to be captain of your ship, take responsibility, take a few risks and full steam a head.

Okay, these people are not perfect and by no means are they way smarter than most of the unsuccessful people out there…they do have their fair share of rough times like every body else… but I assure you they’ll be the first to admit these dark days are essential in shaping who they are today.

The most important things about these dark days is to learn the lessons along the way.

In addition to these dark days, some of the most successful people I know are loaded with some crazy ass dysfunctions like OCD and ADD. It’s just part of who they are, and how they roll.

In the recent No Bullshit Secrets to Stratospheric Success series I talked about the importance of giving, and giving often. To be a serious Bad Ass you have got to understand the importance of value, getting paid good money for providing extremely high levels of service or a product of great value and having the balls to charge two, three and even four times what your competitors are charging.

Not every one will put in to action what they have learnt or been told to do. Only a small percentage of people are gonna get Bad Ass results because there is only a small percentage of people who are doers. It takes a Bad Ass attitude to take the theory and apply it.

The most distinguishing trait of a Bad Ass is that they do not conform. They do not swallow the norms that the majority of the population so readily gobble down… I f had had followed a conventional path I would be wearing a shirt and tie, wouldn’t be allowed to swear, would have to make that there are no speeling or grammatical errors anywhere on this page. But worst of all there’s a good chance that I would be surrounded by drones, zombies and life sucking vampires on a daily basis, instead of meeting cool Bad Ass achievers like your good self.

If I had conformed to these norms by doing all the boring lifeless stuff I mentioned above, nobody would read this blog… because it would be boring, regurgitated crap with no soul, passion or personality. I guarantee if  I followed and emulated what everyone else around me is doing (and what most people are actually telling me I should do) Id be lucky to have a fraction of the readership I do. Ya’ see people not only want to learn and grow but they also want to be entertained along the way.

The serious Ass Kickers have a higher purpose, a deeper motivating factor, something internal that drives them forward.

  • They KNOW they are gonna make mistakes.
  • They KNOW their dreams aren’t gonna be handed to them wrapped up with a bow.
  • They KNOW they are gonna piss off a few people along the way and have a few fingers pointed at them. But do you know what? They don’t give a fuck, they are cool with this.
  • They KNOW not to try and please all of the people all of the time.

The Ass Kissers will be clueless

  • They are afraid to confront their fears.
  • They are way too concerned what others think and say about them.
  • They certainly don’t like to piss people off.
  • They are afraid to make mistakes.
  • They avoid risks whenever possible.
  • They don’t invest in themselves.
  • They will wait for everything to be perfect. (A heads up – It never will).
  • They will take shit from people.
  • They only look out for themselves.
  • They don’t have belief in themselves.

If you regularly read this blog you are in the other 1%… you are the small minority who can see through the bull shit and are stepping up, taking personal responsibility for your life and are an actively doer….and for that I salute you.

You are awesome at what you do, and you know that the cute letters after a name are exactly that, cute letters after a name… that don’t define you at all…. you define you… what you say defines you, your actions define you. Not what others say or think about you. When it all boils down…what the status quo think and do shouldn’t bother us, that’s their business, not ours.

How do I know YOU are like this when 99% of people aren’t? Simples… because you would of ran like a bat out of hell the first time you came across this blog… You would have been scared, and thought these views quite radical and too afraid to be an unconventional Bad Ass like the rest of the 99%ers out there.

I genuinely commend you on being a one percenter, a massive action taker, a person who is not afraid to make mistakes…and learns from them. I have so much respect for the value you provide, the people you help and the balls to live unconventionally. I respect you for being a total Bad Ass.

*** Disclaimer*** I am not bashing the 99%ers out there, I just choose to surround myself with the people who are rising to the top.

I would love to hear your comments in the comment section below. I realise that this post my make me even more enemies. But I don’t believe in holding back, sometimes I gotta say what I gotta say.

I particularly agree with your thoughts on investing in ourselves. Too often we are willing to spend money on trivial things but are resistant to put resources (including time) towards developing ourselves. I also agree with you that when we do decide in invest in ourselves we often then choose to do what is perceived as being ‘right’ instead of what would actually be useful. I spent four years at uni doing an engineering degree I hating and then after graduation was employed as an engineer which I hated all because this was what I was supposed it do. When I eventually woke up and threw it all in to do what I really wanted at the time (join the Army) I never looked back, spending the next thirteen years having the time of my life and learning more than I ever did completing the degree that I was “supposed to do”.

I like it Ryan, I’m now officially a Bad Ass. 8) I must admit I don’t come across the other 99% much, which seems to be a description of corporate life. Most of my friends are self employed, and same goes for the locals in my pub.

Once, I was employed as a teacher for a few years, and I regarded my most important function as entertainment. If I couldn’t keep the kids entertained and interested they wouldn’t learn. I see you’re using the same principle here.

No doubt if they wanted to thay would have ripped it up through college and been a huge success either way. But dropping out gave them the freedom and creativity to pursue the dream – and for that we must be thankful

    Ryan,

I think you are completely correct about people putting their future in the hands of others and then just making excuses about it. Being in control is so much more than bringing home a paycheck and getting a pat on your head for doing what you are told. To be completely in control, you have to make your own way.

    Rock on!

How to be bad-ass is on point! one of the biggest differences between people who are really bad ass and people that are just pretenders all comes down to action. All the people you named to not graduate college but that does not mean they did not learn.

They were all voracious when it comes to learning and busted their asses to get things done. That is the key success. No one is going to be successful sitting on the grass eating Cheetos and playing the Xbox. The only way to success is to get out there, struggle, learn and eventually succeed.

I know I’ve already commented on this article, but I had to come back and give another $0.02.

This article really is worth reading more than once… there’s a load of great bad ass wisdom here. I especially love how you point out that formal qualifications don’t mean squat if you don’t do anything with them.

A lot of the successful people I know have PhD’s and half the alphabet after their names, but I know just as many, if not more, successful people who never made it passed high school (I’m a high school drop-out).

The common denominator between my PhD successful friends and high school drop-out successful friends is that they all invest in themselves, work and think outside the box, and refuse to accept the status quo, and they’re not afraid to break the rules.

Well done, you rule-breaking madman! :-)

    Ryan what’s crackin dude,

This is so true. Many people have giving up on achieving the things they want from life and have handed their destinies over to others to control. There’s too much in life that can be done to just give up and let someone else control our happiness. Being a Bad Ass is scary and takes a lot of internal courage. But when I took the leap to live life on my own terms it felt so normal. I understand now that everything I was doing previously had just been ingrained into my subconscious and therefore my actions were mere replications of those in my environment. To live life on our own terms we’re going to have to start thinking for ourselves.

I agree as far as what you are expressing, ( my son says the same thing) Bill gates Marc Zuckerman and many more are action takers and one more thing they loved money. As lots of people make money, but those who love money it stays with them. Focus hard work and personal development is what it takes to make it collectively with flying colors. Ryan you have the right approach towards life, it will not take you long when you will find yourself prosper and on your way to life of freedom.

  18. First of all I would like to thank Ryan for putting together the 100 blog project. It’s a great concept that correctly utilizes the concepts of networking, connection and social media. I wish I had thought of it myself. There is tons of good advice in this blog, but the advice I most fervently agree with is the necessity to take action, massive action. As a person who has read way too many self help books looking for some “secret” that would make success easy, I now try to focus my reading (other than recreational reading) on books that lead to action. If some motivational type of book doesn’t lead to action then it really isn’t motivational because it hasn’t lead to change in my life. Thanks Ryan for an excellent blog.

So now, 2 degrees later umpteen thousands of dollars of debt later, and so on and so forth it hit me smack dab in the face…Way deep down from beneath the surface bubbled up the most real and the most life changing self talk that I’ve ever heard…that inner voice was like, “B…these things aint gonna validate you, no one’s gonna notice you for your paper qualifications, and no one…I mean no one is going to validate you until you validate yourself”.

    Hey Ryan

Cool post – to me the part that resonates the most is about people not taking responsibility for their actions. This is a trait that’s been growing in the last 20 or 30 years – and contributes to the ‘Jerry Springer Society.’

People just don’t take responsibility for their actions anymore – Hey, I’m deep in debt because of the recession (actually because you spend wayyyyy more than you earn and use credit cards). Hey I’m overweight because I have a slow metabolism (ummm….actually less than 0.1% of the population has a slow metabolism as scientists define it – you’re overweight because you eat too much shit and don’t exercise).

And on it goes – this even happens at Governmental level” We have sovereign debt because of the world recession. And nothing to do with spending more money than the Country was earning then?

Ass Kickers take responsibility for their actions. If those actions fail they go back to the drawing board and try again, they don’t wallow in their own despair and rail against the universe. Because they understand a profound truth that 99% of people don’t understand – The Universe Doesn’t Give A Fuck.

That’s our mission in life – to provide role models for those brave enough to take responsibility for their actions and dare to live the life they dream about.

    Keep on keeping on.

    Hi Ryan

Not sure if I want a bad bottom myself, I like sitting on it:)

You are quite right that most people are stuck in a 9-5 rut – and you know what a rut is right? A grave with the ends kicked out, that’s what a rut is! And double bummer – they are running along the rut the wrong way – 180 degrees off course, like you say.

People like this are zombies, but don’t even know that they are! But kicking a zombie because they are a zombie is a bit mean…they don’t realise where they are….too many years with the head down and nose against the grind stone, they don’t see the horizon and what it can bring. The rut can be real deep! That’s why these folk need help!!

Having said that, there are plenty that will throw that help back in your face, because they haven’t asked for it…”how can you improve on my great job?” Bottom line is that they need to see the light first, understand that the scary world beyond the job has a hidden – but clear – path to dream fulfilment then they will beg for help and your time will not be wasted!

Well this is very true Ryan. And it’s what separates the really successful and happy people from the “not so much” folks. And it is sad – many have the potential they just allow fear and doubt to hold them back. I had enough of that while I was drinking so someone else can take that crap thank you very much. I’ll stick with kicking ass in a big way and making shit happen.

That’s how I roll. And I need one of those wallets. What a great movie.

  29. Hi Ryan,

    Real “Bad Ass” post!

I’m still quite new to marketing online to be honest and find it difficult sometimes breaking away from the norm but am realizing, especially over the past 6 months or so that you really have gotta be a bit different to succeed online…

I’m going to be honest, my head was stuck “up my ass” until a few short months ago as I was trying all sorts of stuff online to make money and getting nowhere fast.

So my first 18 serious months were wasted and I suppose i was stuck in the land of 99 percenters. :)

Things are different for me now, I woke up and smelt the coffee, I invested in a coach to show me the right path to follow…

Slowly but surely I’m growing into a Bad Ass but I’ve still gotta lotta learning to do so expect to see me here for some Bad Ass learnin… :)

    Great post,
    Robert

      Hey Robert,

Its great to hear you are on the right track. I am a firm believer of being different and standing out from the rest. Thats great you have a coach, hows that going?

      • The coaching is going great, It’s with Alex Jeffreys and “Forward to Marketing”, I was actually in a coaching program prior to that with Dave Nicholson but that only lasted 12 weeks…

That taught me some specific basics and how to create my own information product for Clickbank but it was a bit lacking on the marketing side so I joined FTM which is all about marketing.

I’m loving every minute of it as the new stuff I’m learning is awesome. Really looking forward to my future online now and it’s all down to one thing… Looking for HELP rather than the “Next Best thing” which as you know just “Doesn’t Exist”!

Thanks for asking about that Ryan,
        Robert :)

    WZUP??

    In short: HELL. YES.

A bit longer: You have completely distilled the essence of life down to a blog post. WE have to invest in ourselves and take action to live the kinds of lives we want to lead.

    If we don’t, who will?

There’s no one waiting to give me a handout, that’s for sure.

Or is there? Anyone? Aw, shucks, it was worth a try.

But I’m so in tune with this post it’s RIDICULOUS. I had just given my two-weeks notice at my job of 10 years last week. The reasons are for the very same as you wrote about.

I’m not happy doing it, so I need to do something else. Yeah things are not perfect for me but we have to be willing to reach out and grab whatever we can with the skills we have, and if we don’t have the skills we desire at the moment, then go out and get those skills.

It’s simple, but not easy, I know. I don’t have all the answers but I do have resolve and some talent. Plus with blogs like these I have the motivation and the knowledge of some cool people.

    Let’s keep DOING IT, people!

I wish ou every success, be sure to update me on your progress.

  31. Wow I really needed this post this morning, kick ass attitude is what I call it, and I wouldn’t be worried if people don’t like you, like you said who give a shit right? thanks Ryan, you were my inspiration this morning

  32. The funny thing is people think security is the 9-5 job that pays salary plus benefits, yet this can be lost in a flash. It can be more reliable than working for peanuts in the beginning as an entrepreneur but it could also not be. The only true means to success is to carve your own path, I am one who has the 9-5 job and only tests the waters of entrepreneurialism with my blogging as a side hobby. Can it grow to make me enough to live off of, probably not but then I merely use it as a hobby not as a true means.

Other than ventures I can start and manage with little time and capital I don’t have an adventurous high risk spirit, Richard Branson is my idle but I don’t have the Chutzpah to just take something and make it or die trying. I would be more so if I didn’t have a family to support, I think entrepreneurs should always start when they aren’t tied down with things like mortgages, families, the less “stuck” you are in financial obligations the more free you are to pursue potentials.

For every Mark Zucherburg or Richard Branson there are 100k failures and another 250k who just break even. Those are the odds, like it or not and it takes guts to confront them and rise above.

See, I’ve been blogging on and off for years, and some of the folks that comment here on your blog, know me as one that likes to come and go in waves…never really knowing what I’m doing.

    It sucks…and I know it.

But, although I have the 9-5 deal in life, it’s burning me out and I see my own future as something that I control today, but need to make a smooth transition into it. That being said, unfortunately, I hit the Ass Kissers list and although I’m not afraid to admit it, I know that it’s time to make some serious changes.

Take care and thanks for the inspiration.

  34. Ryan,
I like the point about the qualifications. They really don’t mean much if you are not concentrating on what you are good at or what you want to do. Why should an accountant go for a master’s degree if he really wants to be a writer? He’ll only be a better qualified, miserable worker.
    John

  35. Hey Ryan

Absolutely…Although I wasn’t kicking ass just a few short months ago but now i can hold my head high and say yes “I’m now kicking ass”, thanks to my good mentor. Makes me laugh really because I look at others around me who are totally miserable living the 9 – 5 rat race, but yet they turn their nose up at me and my online efforts. But hey my time is now coming and it’s soon going to be me who is laughing :)

There is a saying that goes something like this: The A students from college are employees of the B students who are Managers who work for the C students who own the company. That is often the truth.

I totally agree with much of what you’ve written. IBM hired me between my Sophomore and Junior years of college so I only have an A.A. (in music) and I have never regretted not going back to college (or the debt I would have had). If you get results no one cares how many degrees you have or what your GPA is after your first position or two.

I am going to show my age here though and say that wat is socially acceptable is not necessarily the way to go. There are some words and topics that are – as adults used to say when I was young – “not suitable for mixed company”. What is shown on prime time TV and in PG-13 movies today would have been peep-show material when I was in school.

What I’m saying is if you wouldn’t want to have someone talk that way about those things in front of your Mother or Grandmother or five-year-old, doing so in your blogs will limit your audience. Even if they don’t make me blink (because during my IBM years I worked at railroads, plants and trucking companies) that doesn’t mean I want to see them and I certainly won’t choose to share them – at least not without a warning about profanity so as not to offend others.

  39. Whad uuuuuuuuppppppp, Ryan?

I am finally getting started with my contributions towards the 100 comments challenge. Well, would I get to be called a Bad Ass for not starting early like everyone else? LOL!

What better place to start the marathon than the post of the organizer of the challenge? You have an awesome post here, and I must say you have been very entertaining in this post, like you always are.

I liked the fact that you assumed (appreciated) your users being ass kickers already :-)
But you see, some people would just be readers and never doers. It’s the action that is the most important. Like how I always say, Action is the Master Key to Success. I’ve even written a post on that one.

I’d like to add on to what you have written in the post. I think there has to be a good balance between being a bad ass and not being one. It depends on the area of your life and the people you are dealing with. Like for example, the bad ass attitude may not work with your spouse always, as it wouldn’t take the relationship too far. But then there is no reason to be an ass kisser and take shit from others either.

    Keep up the ass kicking!

    Cheers,

I don’t know if it is an apocryphal story or not, but it is said that Larry Ellison (CEO of Oracle Corp.) told the graduating Yale class of 2000 that they were all losers because they will one day end up working for college drop outs like him, Bill Gates and others.

Qualifications can at best only act as launch pads, after that it is the person himself who has to work his backside off to become something or nothing. The letters after a person’s name are like the handicap that an athlete is given in a race, but if he does not continue to run at the top speed he can be overtaken in the marathon – same is true in life.

Another reason why degrees become obstacles is that they make you aware of dangers and hence fearful. Also they make you arrogant, all knowing and hence complacent. And both – fear and arrogance – are sure recipe for disaster.
