What uuuuuup Heroes and Heroines?

Today, as part of my Read-A-Book-A-Week For 2011 challenge, I have been reading Chicken Soup For The Soul by Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen. The book, for those who have not yet read it, is a collection of stories that do exactly what the title proposes. Many of the stories within the book clicked with me, but for some reason a story by Cherie Carter Scott screamed BLOG POST, BLOG POST, BLOG POST at me. So here is my adapted take on The Lessons Of Being Human.

1 You Are Still At School.

Whether you like it or not you a still a full time student enrolled in the school of LIFE. And unlike any previous schooling you’ve had the School of life has no recess or lunch break. Lessons are to be learned 24/7. It is up to you to take make the most of the opportunities these lessons have to offer. If you play truant you lose out. Simples!

2 You Can’t Make Mistakes.

I don’t particularly like the term ‘Human Being’, I believe a far more accurate description of what we are is ‘Human Becoming’. Personal growth is a process, a journey full of trial and error. “Failed” experiments are just as important as successful experiments, in fact, often we can learn more from our “mistakes” than from our successes. These “Failed” experiments are apart of the process of living and a part of who we are. Embrace mistakes, learn from them.

3 Lessons Are Repeated.

Life will keep presenting the same lesson in various forms and disguises until you learn it. It is only then, that you can ‘pass go and collect £200’ to  advance to the next lesson. If you are in a rut ask yourself the question “Why am I here?” and “What can I learn from this?”.

4 School Is Never Out For Summer.

You can never, pass, graduate or complete your studies at the School of Life. As long as you have a pulse you are learning lessons. Every aspect of life has a lesson.

5 Stop Looking to Become an ‘End Product’.

You will never be complete, you will never be perfect. Stop waiting for the perfect moment or the ‘Right’ circumstances because it will never happen. Start living in the ‘NOW’ because the ‘THEN’ is gonna turn into another ‘Then’ and that ‘Then’ will turn into yet another ‘Then’. You dont’ want to spend your life preparing for the ‘Then’s’ when you could be enjoying the ‘Now’, do ya?

6 Our Classmates Are Extensions of Ourselves.

What we see in other people are aspects of ourselves. Whether we love or hate someone, all we are doing is loving or hating an aspect of ourselves. If you love somebody its because you see characteristics in them that you love about yourself. If you hate somebody then what you are really hating is an aspect of that person that you hate about yourself. You can learn a lot about yourself by the way you look at others.

7 The Choice is Yours.

What you do at the School of Life is completely up to you. You have at your fingertips all the tools and resources that you will ever need to do ANYTHING you want. Lets repeat that, ANYTHING YOU WANT. You have full reign of you future, your career, your relationships your finances. Get on with it!!!

8 We Have Been Given Cheat-notes.

The answers to life lie inside you. You can tap into these answers by asking questions and learning to look, listen and trust the answers.

9 YOU WILL FORGET ALL THIS.

  • What life lessons have you learned that you would like to share with the class?
  • What Rules would you include to the instruction manual ‘Being Human’?

Please Spread The Word and share this post like an awesome Human Becomimg.

Cool post…I like the idea of extracting lessons from a book. I use books as an inspiration all the time…I think its a more unique approach than to use other blog posts as an inspiration…

Awesome post Ryan. I agree with so many points. We must always keep learning, testing, and refining, with everything we do in life, not just marketing or what not. The more conscious of this we become the more we understand the impact of our actions on our lives and the lives of others, which can really be huge.

Thanks for another awesome post. Keep learning!

    Great Post Ryan,

One life lesson/Rule that I have learned is that it is OK to take a risk on yourself. I think this is a hard one for people to do as we are so brought up to live within the status quo, that taking a risk where others might look at you like you are nuts, is hard to do. But if you know it feels right and is good for you-go for it. I am always working towards being a better risk taker as it leads to so many good things in life.

I love the line on mistake making, mistakes are such great learning tools, but are looked at in such a negative fashion. They should be positives, as you can learn so much from them. I know I have learned much from my mistakes in life. And will continue to learn from them.

    Peace.

I like the idea of looking at ‘mistakes’ in a positive light. If we are making mastakes then we must be growing, so therefore the more mistakes we make the better we become – quite a paradox.

    Hi Ryan,

I haven’t read Chicken Soup For The Soul and I guess that it is another one of those ‘classics’ that I really should have a look at.

I particularly like number 5 and how it talks about not waiting for the perfect circumstances. One of my favorite quotes at the moment is from Seth Godin,”It doesn’t matter if you are always right. It matters that you are always moving.’

Yes Chicken soup for the soul is a popular book, But I have a feeling few people have written books with the same title. Or may be one book with different chapters by different, as I keep seeing different author names with this name. I do not know the mystery ?

Any ways your blog post has a good touch of your own. Every tip that you have mentioned is sensible. I like “Schools is never out for summer” I believe in this. Every minute of your life live with open eyes and learn a lesson from it, that is what life is all about.

    Enjoy while you can

  7. You make some great points here Ryan!

Yes, we area all students of “Life”, always living and always learning. Once you start to view yourself as a “teacher” you are finished. Life is about growth and forward progress. There is something to learn from everything and everyone, whether it is what to do or what not to do.

There are also no mistakes in life, only learning experiences. Each of these experiences are there to get you back on track. Everyone is on a journey and following a particular path. The point of every experience is to keep you on that path. When you stop and think about your life and where you are now, you will see how each and every experience has brought you to this exact place and time.

    Rock On!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I like how you said we can learn from EVERYONE, everyone is different and has a unique set of experiences so share. Sometimes when we make ‘mistakes’ we find answers and solutions to totally unrealted areas of our lives. The answers are always there, we just need to open our eyes and look for them.

  8. Adrienne says:

Another great post Ryan…. I’ve read the book but it’s been several years ago now.

You covered some excellent points in your post. I guess it’s been at least 15 years now that I learned a lot of the lessons you shared with us. Life is just one big lesson after another and the people who are in your life help you whether you think that to be true or not. We are all students and we never stop learning whether that is our intention or not. I still love learning and especially things that have to do with life. I’m a big believer that another can change their lives, they just have to make that conscious decision and then stick by it. Most people aren’t willing to do the work.

Thanks again Ryan and you know I’ll be back to visit again soon.

Right on! We are all students together, we can learn sooo much more when we share experiences with each other. And agree, it can be hard work, VERY hard work. When I first started studying personal development I thought I could just read a book or two and turn into an overnight success. That certainly hasnt been the incase, quite the opposite actually. Personally, I have found the more I learn about personal development the harder it gets. .. Strange!!!

Perhaps I don’t need to with your summary!

If I read it right, you gotta get on with what you’ve got, learn on the fly and perfect doesn’t exist so don’t get hung up on it. Someone should tell the poor souls aiming for size zero.

I heard an interview with Sir Bob Geldoff recently – he talked about the concept of being ‘complete’ as a human is the moment when you keel over cos that is the time when you are done!

  12. Paul Wolfe says:

    Hey Ryan

Books and movies can make great ‘teaching experiences’ for us all – especially if they’ve used (either consciously or unconsciously) the Hero’s Journey paradigm as their story core. The Hero’s Journey can be seen as a model explaining the path of human development – that’s why it’s such a good teaching model. And if you pick the right examples it works well for teaching because the bulk of your audience will be familiar with your story examples and resonate with the teaching….

Hope that makes sense….it’s something I intend to explore over the coming months on my own blog….

Life – a kind of chaos that has enormous creative potential. In it is hidden a predetermined destiny. Life can be captured, comprehended by means of intuition rather than reason. 15. Hi Ryan,

If I am not mistaken, I first got my hands on the book while I was still at high school. It was one of the first few books I remember investing my pocket money on :-)

Great collection of stories, I must say. And I probably never finished reading all of them. Even if I had, most of them are now sitting at the back of my mind.

One think that resonated with me now when I read this post is that we should not look forward to being an end product. What is important is what we do with our time now, and that we keep doing and keep moving.

Like you also mentioned, we need to keep learning. Reminders like this are what motivates many!
